January 13 Update: A follow up to the contents of this entry can be found here.

I checked this blog's statistics this morning. Hits from search engines are always fun, because you'd never know what random composition of words that make up the searchstring on a search engine can lead someone to an entry on this blog.

Last night there was a hit from Yahoo.

The user-input searchstring was "vernon+netto", and it led the searcher to the entry with the old hockey photo, where my former classmate Vernon Robert Netto's name was clearly displayed.

So I went to the Yahoo page, just to see what other hits returned.

I saw several pages that were related to each other, and it chilled my blood. I clicked on one, a CNN.com page. The page was dated February 23 2005. And it had a list of persons still missing by that date. Quickly, I hit ctrl+F for the Firefox find bar and started typing: V. E. R. N. O.-...

...and Firefox jumped to and highlighted what I was looking for.

Netto, Vernon Robert
Vernon Robert Netto, male, 32, 6', Malaysian, skin tone dark, lives in Banda Aceh.

The age and description fits the name of my former classmate. Was he at Banda Aceh when the Dec 26 2004 tsunami devastated it? If he was, did he survive? What news of him now? I certainly heard nothing, directly or indirectly, from the ACS Sitiawan Forum. The last I spoke to him was in 1994 or 1995, at the Seri Manjung bus station before I returned to work on the East Coast from Sitiawan. I haven't seen or heard from him since.

Here's hoping for the best for him.
