SWD6: Our First RPG Session Ever

Strikeforce Enteague Episode 01 Trial Run It was way back in 1989 when I received my first tabletop RPG, the first edition Star Wars The Roleplaying Game and the Star Wars Sourcebook by West End Games. I read through the rules and thought, let’s try this out. I didn’t even start with “Rebel Breakout”, the introductory adventure that came in the book. I took a school exercise book and created a maze of corridors and rooms and thought, “Okay, this’ll make a great Imperial space station interior.” Actually the map wouldn’t make a lick of sense as a military installation, but it was my first try. Sila decided to be a bounty hunter and rolled up a player character whom she named Shanna Toarinar, and she went on to play Shanna for another ten years in realtime thereafter. And the campaign would go on for many years until I was […]

There is a Lambda-class shuttle named Tarrasque in my Star Wars campaign, for reals

Midget Tarrasque

Tarrasques are the most lethal creatures without a destructive breath weapon in the Dungeons and Dragons mythology. You don’t need a lot, just one will do in any RPG campaign if you need a continent or two levelled. This is either a very young tarrasque from the planet Falx (if we’re playing in a Spelljammer campaign) or a midget tarrasque. In both cases, I think the city in the image will have an hour or two before it’s reduced to rubble. Click on the thumbnail to view a larger image.

Across The Stars

A follow up post from the earlier D’Kathi alien concept design, here are the final artwork commissioned by Christopher Mennell for his Across The Stars science fiction game setting. While it starts out looking and feeling Star Trek with a lot of analogous signature elements, it diverges in many ways and has the potential for imaginative game masters to take it into high concept science fiction.

D’Kathi Concept Design

Christopher Mennell’s Across The Stars commission is presently being worked on. Here’s a delightful surprise that occurred over email / Google+ discussions of the project. One of the aliens I have to create an initial form for is the D’Kathi. The image below is my first sketch of the alien’s head. Suddenly, artist Eric Quigley came up with his own painting of my D’Kathi design using Painter and Photoshop. It looks spectacular as can be seen below. Click here to visit Eric’s website.

BareBones Fantasy: The First Quest

The night before we headed home to Kuala Lumpur from Pasir Mas, Irfan and I decided to try out the BareBones Fantasy RPG. BareBones Fantasy (BBF) is a simple – but intrinsically complete and very customisable – role-playing game engine that allows gamemasters and players to run adventures in the vein of classic Tolkienesque fantasy worlds, with Elves and Dwarves and Halflings and Orcs. I was sent the beta version for my DwD Studios art commission job, so I had a copy printed out the week earlier. It runs on DwD Studios’ own D00Lite system, which only uses the d10 dice either as percentile rolls or total-up rolls. Note: The above is not the actual cover, but something I put together quickly and had printed! Click here to view the skilfully painted cover by Eric Quigley, and to read more about BareBones Fantasy at the DwD Studios’ website. Character generation […]

D6 Stats of a Star Wars Hat

From Season 2, Episode 17: “Bounty Hunters” of Star Wars: The Clone Wars comes Embo the Bounty Hunter, a male Kyuzo. His signature gear is his wide-brimmed, armoured hat, which he’s able to use as a shield when turned into incoming blaster bolts. Also, he is able to throw the hat to strike a target which then returns to him like Captain America’s shield. Here is my OpenD6 stats for Embo’s Hat. EMBO’S HAT Gear: EMBO’S HAT Type: Awesome Frisbee-Shield Hat Skill: Melee parry (shield against ranged weapons) / Thrown weapons (for throwing attack) Difficulty: Easy (to shield), Difficult (to throw) Damage Resistance: 5D Thrown damage: STR + 1D Note: Returning weapon: When throwing, upon Wild Die of 6, you automatically retrieve the returning hat. Else, you need to roll a second Moderate Thrown Weapons skill to grab it in mid-air if nothing stops it from returning back to the […]

BareBones Experiment Artwork

DWD Studios came up with a great project suggestion. Somewhat like Wicked North Games’ Azamar: The Paradise Fragment project, I was to create a cover and six interior black and white artwork, which the game developers will create a adventure around them. The adventure will be a supplement to their BareBones Fantasy RPG. The cover has a creature that’s pretty blue about things. How will the rest of the artwork be used in the still-untitled adventure? Watch this space when I announce its eventual release at the end of the year. Here are the rest of the interior images.

Mecha RPG

Heroic Journey Publishing commissioned a series of artwork for the Mecha Mercenaries supplement for their Mecha RPG. Here are some, but not all, of the mecha arrayed together to form a 1280px by 800px black and white wallpaper for your widescreen monitor. Check out their fantastic Mecha RPG at DriveThruRPG, which is fun, simple to play and very true to its source!

Void Vultures Photos

The artwork commissioned for Void Vultures has been released for some time, but I haven’t had the time to download and print it out. I created a cover using Inkscape with a pair of creative common-licensed images via Google, printed it and bound it. Here are some photos. I have yet to run the game though. When I do I’ll have a report written here on the blog. Click here to download Rüls of the Void and Derelicts of the Void for free.
