Star Wars The Force Awakens Review

We finally saw Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens the evening of the 18th, a day after general release. I discovered that trying to write a review about it was impossible for me. I will get to that soon, but what about the movie itself? It was to me an excellent Star Wars story with new characters interacting with the old, swashbuckling their way through space to save lives. I suppose the story beats did get too close for comfort to the original trilogy, but with characters that were amazingly developed and actors who had great chemistry with each other. It was a fun movie. Although there were some things that I did not like about it (such as how it was possible to see the First Order’s beam from a planet too far away), these things are trivial compared to the fun experienced from watching it. I loved […]

Troubleshooters Patch

Troubleshooters Unit Patch

Recently I completed a commission for a unit patch for a Rebel Alliance group known as the Troubleshooters for Seamus Conneely’s Star Wars RPG campaign. Unit patches are fun. I need to do more unit patches or nose art. There must a truckload of Star Wars RPG campaigns that require them for their group or for their ships.

Lost in Translation

We had two weeks to spend in Kuala Lumpur because of my course. Let’s get the unpleasantness out of the way first: I had the flu for two days in the first week, then three in the second. It was unpleasant not just because I felt like a popsicle all day but also because it was expensive, but I did not miss a day of class. During the weekend that marked the midpoint of our adventure in KL, we spend the night at Kak Nor’s house where Irfan played to his heart’s content with his cousins! On Sunday, I went to continue the Modesty Blazing Star Wars Edge of the Empire campaign, picking up where we left off 14 months ago when I still lived in the city. Ain and Irfan bought a Corellian VCX-100 freighter which I put to good use during the game earlier. So the intensive translation […]

EOTE: Dirge of the Nepotist Captain

Modesty Blazing 08 Dirge of the Nepotist Captain *** Previously (and 14 real time months ago) on Star Wars Modesty Blazing… Thanks to the course I was sent on  gave me the opportunity to continue Modesty Blazing, the Edge of the Empire campaign I run for GOKL. I honestly never thought I’d be able to continue the story that had begun more than a year ago when I still lived in Kuala Lumpur. After a quick social media notification, the group agreed to meet at Wira Games and Hobbies. The Rancor’s Rancor Ghyel had been annexed by Captain Bullpup Barqueslayer of the Imperator-class Star Destroyer Cockchafer! The stolen Lambda-class shuttle carrying Zalo Hai the lost Prince of Ghyel and his de facto aides and protectors temporarily attached to the Ghyel Ministry of History and Archaeology, Trianii Qillian Ryn, Zeltron Darter Kel, Trandoshan John Tray’Essek and droid VAX-11/750 reverted from hyperspace […]

Set Course For The City

And so it was that the workplace booked me on a two week course. The course was to be held back in Kuala Lumpur. You know the city: Irfan’s kampung. We drove southbound and spent the night in Sitiawan before continuing on to Kuala Lumpur after a breakfast with Irfan’s Atok and Opah. We stopped at Sekinchan at a restaurant where lunch was to be had on what appeared to be a kotatsu. A novel thing, and it helped that the food was delicious. We arrived in the city and headed for Cikma’s place where we rendezvoused with every sibling of Ain (and their family) where Irfan was reunited with his cousin Aiman once more. Then after, we headed for the building where the course was held way across town from Cikma’s place. Ain had discovered that the place had accommodations for course attendees and they were affordable. Because of […]

My 10 Best Drawlloweens

I discovered an activity called Drawlloween that someone made up to draw things daily in October in conjunction with Halloween. There is a list of topics, which you can see at my Google Photo album. Naturally, instead of spooky stuff I turned it into an absolute nerdfest. Eyeball is of course the pilot slang for an Imperial TIE fighter, just like squints are TIE interceptors, dupes TIE bombers and bright TIE Advanced. It’s actually Herman Munster reading Promethean The Created rule book. Elsewhere in the album (But not in this blog post) are Michael Morbius reading Vampire The Masquerade and Jacob Russell readying Werewolf The Forsaken. It’s not a nerdfest without at least one obscure G.I. Joe reference… … nor without Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem. Barfolomew: “It’s not that we’re afraid, far from it, it’s just that we’ve got this thing about death… It’s not us.” How many XPs […]

Captain Ithano

Captain Ithano

My second Star Wars The Force Awakens fan art is Captain Ithano a.k.a. the Crimson Corsair. He holds in his arm a guidebook for becoming a pirate or a privateer. (A letter of marque is required for the latter choice.) Here’s a close up of the book he’s carrying which I painted from scratch using a photo of the actual book cover.

Constable Zuvio

Constable Zuvio from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, my first ever fan art for the movie which is due in forty days. I am slacking. Not really, it’s a long story. First, it was sketched and painted with Krita, then finished up with GIMP. Zuvio looks like a Kyuzo does he not?

Those Stories About What Happened…

I might have overdone it with the “Those Stories About What Happened” meme adapted from the latest Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer, pertaining to West End Games’ Star Wars The Roleplaying Game material. It probably what Han would tell these kids about the Galactic Civil War shenanigans as played by Star Wars D6 RPG players. First, here is a general flavour of memories of role-playing games as a general, not just limited to Star Wars. Then, there was that one time Sila stole Zardra’s stun cloak during Tatooine Manhunt when she and Puggles Trodd launched an attack on her party when they were asleep. Disclaimer! I’ve never actually played Starfall: Not to mention the exploits of the Black Curs team. And finally, from Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments From The Rim, a gag written by a tabloid-esque news outlet in the Galaxywide Newsnet chapter of the book: Addendum (27/10/2015): Don’t […]

Where is Nien Nunb in this trailer? WHERE?

Han Solo and the Princess and the Trailer

Everyone and their pet tauntaun has written something about the new Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer, so here I’ll be regurgitating some thoughts about the musical score used for it: BUT FIRST, here’s the trailer, released earlier today. There are two familiar cues in the trailer, the Han Solo and the Princess cue and the Force theme. BUT SECOND, a disclaimer: The Han Solo and the Princess theme is my favourite theme ever in Star Wars, and why I think Rebel Fleet – End Titles in The Empire Strikes Back is the best of all Star Wars end titles score, surpassing even Caravan of Courage. Before the music go on to the full-blown new orchestration of the Han Solo and the Princess cue in the trailer, they play a four-note melody thrice. The first iteration was played on piano – the first notes being the one we hear when […]

X-Wing: The Asteroid Gambit

Yesterday, Irfan and I finally started playing the X-Wing Miniature Game that was given to us by Darren when we last visited Kuala Lumpur. What Darren gave us was astoundingly lots, so many thanks to him for letting us have this trove. We started with the basic game. Irfan controlled an Incom T-65 X-Wing fighter and I controlled two Sienar Fleet Systems TIE/ln fighters. His Pilot Card is Luke Skywalker, and mine were “Mauler” Mithel (apparently the father of Reljii Mithel) and Academy Pilot (a strange name to give your son, Mrs. Pilot). We did not carry Upgrade Cards, like astromech droids and proton torpedos. The sculpts for these minis are amazingly detailed. One might even want to collect them because they look very nice indeed. I have seen the Corellian Corvette mini in a box back in KL some time ago and it looks fantastic. And still too expensive […]

Star Wars T-shirts

We’re Not The Droids You’re Looking For

Irfan got a present from his aunt last weekend when two aunts visited. He got this great t-shirt filled with droids. There’s everything from the demolitions droid, some astromech droids, battle droids, a power droid to protocol droids. But there is no Bollux and Blue Max, sadly. So I too wore a t-shirt with a droid on it and took a photo of us. So we would have a photo. Of both of us wearing t-shirts. Of droids.

Rogue One Strikeforce Enteague

Strikeforce Enteague The Movie?

Once upon a time, Shanna Toarinar the bounty hunter stole a captured A-Wing Fighter from the Empire. Soon after, she was recruited to be the first member of the Strikeforce Enteague. Thus begins the Star Wars RPG campaign – using West End Games’s D6 system – that lasted for 10 years in real time as well as game time. Today Lucasfilm released a cast photo of their new Star Wars film: Strikeforce Enteague the Movie*. With Felicity Jones as Shanna Toarinar, Diego Luna as Ace Browning Crossfire and Donnie Yen as Ben-One-Howel. Download the Worlds of the Enteague Sector D6 pdf supplement that I made here! * Sigh. I wish. Sigh. But seriously, doesn’t the Rogue One cast photo looks like someone’s Star Wars D6 (or an Age of Rebellion) rebel commando party? Sigh**. **Siiigh!!! (Just in case this needs to be said: Yes, that is a promotional photo from […]

Paper Minis: More Imperial Troops

It’s that random time of the week/month/year again when I draw and release a new free set of Star Wars RPG paper miniatures for your player characters to tangle with on your tabletop. Imperial Naval Troopers and the new Imperial Combat Drivers (from Star Wars Rebels)! Two different illustrations for each type, all standing by for battle in the Galactic Civil War, with the former wielding DH-17 blasters and the latter E-11 blasters. Lords of Nal Hutta

One of the gifts given to me by Kai and the Gamers of KL crew on our trip back to Kuala Lumpur was Lords of Nal Hutta, the recently-released sourcebook for Hutts and Hutt Space for Star Wars Edge of the Empire roleplaying game by Fantasy Flight Games. Bonus: it was co-written by Gary Astleford. It would certainly help my gamemaster (GM) the campaign I ran for GOKL, entitled “Modesty Blazing”, because we were about to meet Sassatania the Hutt, Zeltron pilot Darter Kel’s former fling and daughter of Teemo the Hutt. An illustration of Sassatania can be found in this blog post. Coincidentally, several locations described in the book had been featured in two different Star Wars D6 campaigns I ran for GOKL. (Well, one campaign and one one-shot session.) Sriluur of course showed up in A Bad Example in the Spacelanes campaign which was never finished. Kwenn Station […]
