Birthday boy in jammies

Six Years Old Today

It’s September 21st again and once more it’s time for Irfan’s birthday. Wearing his Iron Man t-shirt a gift from Ayah Cik, he greeted the arrival of his cousin Aiman (as well as Aiman’s parents) with whom he immediately shared his cache of toys. Aiman was overwhelmed by the amount of Hot Wheels collected by Irfan over the years, which Ain had recently kept in a single plastic container. While the kids were playing at (and making a mess of) the living room, Ain was busy in the kitchen producing food, food and more food. Above: Atok and Opah Irfan weren’t able to come (’cause I wrecked their car) but, they’ve prepared in advance with this awesome Spider-Man birthday card. Above: Aiman claps his hand – mostly because of other people prompting him by clapping their hands. Above: Nasi ayam Chinese-style a recipe taught to Ain by Opah Irfan is […]

Packed Lunch is Packed

After only bring in sandwiches for snacks at kindergarten, Irfan brought an awesome looking packed lunch in his schoolbag which consisted of awesome meehoon goreng that Ain fried earlier in the morning He finished it off at lunch. I love the little fork and spoon set attached!

More Pictures Painted With A Tablet

This time it’s not me. Irfan’s learned to not only draw and colour pictures digitally, but he’s also learnt to use layers. I’d create a file for him with two layers, and he’ll do the rest. He select the top layer to draw his line art. Then, he’ll select the bottom layer and choose the colours he want to paint. Let’s go through one artwork at a time: Take for example this piece here, some kind of a plant based monster complete with petals and legs. Bewildered by the roof like structure atop the monster’s face, he finally revealed to me today that the creature was based on Constance’s final incarnation in Monster House. The antennae apparently receives television signals. [[image:irfan_art00.jpg:The Flower House Monster:center:0]] Obviously, this artwork is of a car which has some strange colouring choices alongside a potted plant.[[image:irfan_art01.jpg:That flower is history in a second:center:0]] After only a […]

A Conjunctivitis Onslaught

Well, it’s not really an onslaught, but Irfan’s right eye seem to be suffering from viral conjunctivitis. He’s home from school today with a note from the doctor, and seem to enjoy eyedrops being applied onto his cornea. I think Ain’s going to pop an artery when she sees the mess in the living room when she gets home from work in an hour.

Irfan Moves Pieces Around The Board

[[image:irfan-chess-player01.jpg:Armored Knight takes Cyborg Pawn with Charged Plasma Bolt:center:0]] Irfan’s Cik Emma got a free chessboard after a trip to the PC Fair at KLCC. So I spent a short while teaching Irfan to play chess, showing him how the various pieces move across the board. I checkmated him quite easily in the first game. However, if I remember my last games (which might have been with Sila, about a quarter of a million years ago), I get wiped off the board pretty easily because I usually carry out suicide runs which in the end leaves me with nothing but one or two pawns guarding my king.

Team Ohio Skype Call

Communications As If It’s Science Fiction

Earlier today (well, about 5 minutes ago) Hisham, Ain and Irfan talked with Sila, Vin, Atok Irfan and Opah Irfan for almost an hour with one of those new-fangled tee vee phones. (Well, we used Skype.) We could hear them perfectly but not vise versa… no idea why. Irfan showed off his drawing skills live to the other side of the planet. Atok Irfan is contemplating installing a webcam on his machine at home. Here’s a screencap of what transpired.

On To The Far Side Of The Planet, Redux

Irfan’s grandparents left Malaysia at 2245 local time for Singapore, which is their first leg on the trip to Middletown to visit Sila. An attempt to catch the ERL from Bandar Tasik Selatan to the KLIA was scrubbed because of the Monday back-from-work rush hour. So we jumped directly to the district of Sepang where many a visible flying machines dotted the sky on their way to and from the airport. There was a minor hitch with one of the luggage, which required a new baby padlock. But thereafter, everything went smoothly. [[image:klia_july2008_00.jpg:Checking in at the counter:center:0]] [[image:klia_july2008_01.jpg:New padlock being tested by Atok:center:0]]We went to the surau for Maghrib and then to the Food Garden (a food court, not a real garden… maybe someday, but not today) for a bit of dinner. Also, Irfan’s Opah Ngah and a friend joined us for a while. [[image:klia_july2008_02.jpg:Irfan playing with the trolley:center:0]] [[image:klia_july2008_03.jpg:Irfan […]

Irfan’s NimbleX

I’m currently running a new LiveCD within which resides the Linux operating system called NimbleX, and I’m writing this article with the Konqueror browser nestled deep within the LiveCD. The reason why this article is entitled “Irfan’s NimbleX” is because upon the startup of the OS, a voice says, “Welcome to Irfan’s NimbleX” in the voice of famed Star Trek and The Simpsons guest actor Stephen Hawking. The special thing about NimbleX is that the ISO file you download to burn into a CD is customisable! You get to decide what applications are included, how the default wallpaper looks like (and upload your own), the startup and shutdown sound and other neat stuff. This is how part of the custom ISO generator page looks like: Click on the thumbs to view the full images. I haven’t fiddled around with xorg to get the screen to conform to 1200 by 800 […]

Two front teeth

Top Incisors Have Been Extracted

For the second time, Irfan visited the dentist with two loose upper incisors. According to the dentist, it would hurt to pull them out directly unlike before. So without further ado the doctor brandished a needle which was epic in size. Irfan took it all in stride and within five minutes the two teeth were out of there. Irfan bit on the gauze to stop the bleeding, but when asked if it hurt, he just smiled and shook his head. What a trooper.

Irfan’s Second Sports Day

Last Friday, Irfan had his second ever sports event at his kindergarten during this years’ Teachers’ Day. This time, Atok and Opah Irfan was also present for the proceedings. Last year it wasn’t so apparent, but this year it was so obvious that Irfan towered over everyone else, and the photos here do not do his actual height real justice. As Opah Irfan and I snapped away with still cameras, Atok Irfan wielded a video camera which I turned into a proper DVD video in the next couple of days. Irfan was asking Ain for drinks every a couple of seconds or so. Here is a photojournal of what happened at the sports day. Above: As per last year, everyone’s a winner; no one’s a loser. Above: Winky and his friends gather together on the field one last time for a photo shoot.

Irfan Takes Atok’s Pictures

As told previously, Irfan likes to use the camera (that is wondrously chimaeraed into the phone by wizards) to take pictures of everything. Some weeks ago, we went to Sitiawan and lo and behold, there was a kenduri at the Seri Manjong stadium that was organized by the new state government which gave the old state government a run for their money during the recent elections. During the speech by the local representatives and politicians, Irfan took a couple of good photos of his grandfather. .[[image:manjong00.jpg::inline:0]][[image:manjong01.jpg::inline:0]]. Then he got bored and went to enjoy the nearby playground. .[[image:manjong02.jpg::inline:0]][[image:manjong03.jpg::inline:0]].

Irfan the Photographer

Nowadays when eating out, Irfan asks for the phone so he can scamper all over the restaurant being an avant-garde photographer of sorts. He just aims at something he likes and clicks. Next time I’m giving him the phone when we’re out in the park or picnic or balik kampung. Here are some of the photos he took recently.

Irfan, Uncles and Anti-Gravity

Irfan went swimming this morning at the building’s swimming pool. With him went his Opah Cu and his uncles, Pak Ngah and Pak Cu. Thanks to exotic technology that manipulates gravitons, Irfan, Pak Ngah and Pak Cu were floating about on the water using anti-gravity. Atuk Irfan was there to take pictures of the amazing event with his camera. Here are several images of the wire-fu hijinks. Irfan Gets a Diploma

There was a ceremony today. It was organised by the owners of the kindergartens, one of which was Irfan’s. So today Irfan got a diploma. Before that, though, there were a couple of speeches and performances by 5- and 6-year-olds. Irfan’s class performed a little dance. The music went along the lines of “going to the zoo”. Some kids were the zoo animals. Some were trees. Irfan was the middle ‘O’ of the word ‘ZOO’ and was in the middle of the back row probably because of his height. No surprise, cause that’s where I was usually placed in old school photos as well. [[image:letter_o_01.jpg:O RLY?:center:0]] [[image:letter_o_02.jpg:The march to the stage:center:0]] [[image:letter_o_03.jpg:He loves his white gloves:center:0]] [[image:letter_o_04.jpg:Assembly onstage.:center:0]] [[image:letter_o_05.jpg:Performance is over:center:0]] Then, the camera batteries died, and I had to switch to my phonecam for the diploma-giving.
